Frequently Asked Questions

Why Community?

We believe firmly in the importance of community in sustaining healthy and productive lives, particularly in advanced age.  While we hope and expect to pursue independent and active lives, we recognize that the time will come when individuals among us will need help and mutual support.  As friends already sharing in community, we would hope to be there for this purpose.

Why Center City?

As longtime Center City dwellers, we recognize the many advantages that urban living offers to the elderly in terms of diverse neighborhoods, easy accessibility to wide spectrums of activities, excellent institutions and services, freedom from reliance on the automobile, and so on.  We hope to avail ourselves of these advantages to their fullest.

What about Health Care?

We expect to create a wellness/health center with one or more nurse-practitioners on site who would see patients and manage each resident’s care. Physician attention would be provided through a partnership with an existing nearby hospital-based family practice with geriatric expertise. Assisted living services would be provided on site and within the resident’s apartment wherever possible. FCCRC does not plan to replicate existing, high-quality Center City support services, such as day care programs for persons suffering from dementia, but will look to relationships with places where such services are provided. While we do not anticipate a nursing care facility on site, we would have formal relationships with one or more of the many excellent nursing facilities in the area and provide regular and frequent transportation to these facilities for the well partner and friends.

Where We Are in Development

Presently, we are at the exploration stage.  Our small group of initiators, who until now consist of Quakers and longtime friends, has met with various experts, visited several life care style facilities, and is now studying the viability of one promising potential location.  We now are at the point of widening our membership by attracting others to the project who have similar commitments to urban lifestyle.  If the idea speaks to your needs and dreams, we hope you will join us.
